With What a Time to Be Alive’s success in 2016, it's safe to assume that a lot of artists will follow suit with making collaboration albums. Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole, A$AP Ferg and Future, and A$AP Rocky and Juicy J are all rumored to be releasing joint projects this year. All of them have the opportunity to combine what we love best about our favorite artists. That’s what makes the end result of collab albums great; If done correctly, collab albums can forever be deemed a classic. For example, Kanye & Jay Z’s album: Watch the Throne, Curren$y & The Alchemist’s album: Covert Coup, and Wale & 9th Wonder’s album: Back to the Feature. Sonically, these albums are great and the impact they've had on its fan base is as well.
It is clear that fans will enjoy the sound that is produced from mixing the talents of their favorite rappers.
With that being said, it is interesting to think about how dope it would be if these rappers was to collectively make a project together for us to listen to:
Childish Gambino & Chance The Rapper
Childish and Chance has proven in the past that their styles can sync together almost perfectly.
With songs like, The Worst Guys, Favorite Song, and They Don’t Like Me the sound they’ve created is unique, just like the emcees’ flows.
The Worst Guys was a very mellow and laidback track, Childish killed it relentlessly with his ability to present his writtens in a way that syncs with the instrumental perfectly, also the vocals he had at the end of the song is very appeasing to the listener. Even though Chance is only on the chorus of the song, how his voice is presented is what makes this good song great. During the chorus Chance and Childish take turns with the hook, Without Chance’s nasally, yet appeasing, voice the song just would not be the same.
Favorite Song, the more upbeat and fun track that the two have made together proves that if the two were to make an album together it would be interesting to listen to. Chance really gets Childish out of his comfort zone with Favorite Song, not like Childish has a problem with that. Chance’s ability to flow and drop substance over quicker beats was proven in his album Acid Rap, it is almost like Chance introduces a new perspective of way of flowing to Childish.
They Don’t Like Me, aggressive and they paid homage to I Think They Like Me by Dem Franchize Boyz. Childish’s EP Kunai/STN MTN he sampled many songs from the early 2000’s, an era of rap that isn’t really given the glorification that it deserves a lot. What’s crazy about this is They Don’t Like Me is a song from Childish’s debut mixtape Royalty showing how genuinely he feels about early 00’s music. Chance unique style of flowing on instrumentals is again nothing short of sheer excellence! The soulfulness in the instrumental matches Chance’s nasally voice in such a way that it creates a sound that will make any listener enjoy this track.
If these two were to make a track together it will definitely be straight fire, you can tell when these two record the production is paid attention to closely and both artists respect each other’s style.
Jay Z & Nas
It’s still saddening, no more Jigga albums!
But what if that was just a clever rouse. The internet would literally collapse if the two emcees with a decade long beef decided to combine their talents for fan service. The beef ended years ago, and since then we’ve heard two tracks from Nas and Jay Z. Black Republican on Nas’ project Hip Hop is Dead and Success that was on Jigga’s album American Gangster. The two tracks that the artists have together shows how much love Nas and Jay Z has for their music. You would think that because of the beef, Nas’ DEADLY Ether track, and words exchanged between the two, that them working together would be sub-par or terrible. With both tracks the emcees’ showed how they can still produce quality music together regardless to what may have happened in the past. Nas’ album Life is Good, which released in 2012, really shows how consistent the quality of Nas’ sound still is. One could debate that Jay Z has “changed up” or “sold out” with albums like Magna Carta Holy Grail, but they also must realize how much Jay’s life has changed; he’s still the same Jigga that we love, but he’s speaking from a different perspective. With that being said, relative to the tracks they released in the past you can almost guarantee that quality and syncing will be paid close attention to if they were to record.
MF DOOM and Ghostface Killah
DOOM and Tony Stark working together? Vicious.
Supposedly,MF DOOM and Ghostface are supposed to be releasing an album together this year. The record is titled DOOMSTARKS combining DOOM’s name with another alias of Ghostface, Tony Stark. The two have many songs together; Angels, One More Beer, and Lively Hood. All the tracks are amazingly produced, breaking down how sonically appealing the tracks DOOM and Face have done together will together.
Simply put, DOOM and Face both have a great talent of flowing over beats that are only worthy to them. Their style in doing so may be different from each other, however it is clear that if the the two were to collab, you’d be getting both ends of the spectrum when it comes to lyricism and flow.
Earl Sweatshirt and Tyler the Creator
OF forever. You would be crazy to think it’s just completely finished.
The album between the two artists has been thought about since we first heard the two on the same track. The two have a variety of tracks together, the one’s that we enjoyed the most was songs like Couch, Pigeons, Whoa, and Orange Juice.
In Earl’s debut album titled; Earl, Tyler is featured and referred to on the album several times. They display in their bodies of work how perfectly they can sync and also how close the two are. So close to the point where the message behind the tracks is told from two different perspectives and can be understood as one.
If you have not heard any of the tracks between the two; MITHREADS HIGHLY suggests giving these albums a listen: The Odd Future Tape Vol. 1 and 2, Radicals, 12 Odd Future Songs, Earl, and Goblin.
A bit much? Nah. After you hear their talents increase to heights you wouldn’t of thought possible previously, you’ll soon realize why OF has the fanbase it has.
Nevertheless, if Tyler and Earl was to collab for an entire project it would be sheer excellence. If you disagree and have not given Tyler, Earl, or any members of OF a chance; you should seriously reevaluate that decision. In the beginning Tyler and Earl had a more ominous demeanor in there songs, with each album release after you notice the progression the two makes as artists. Tyler increases his ability to vividly paint the picture of what is going on in his mind and Earl increases his ability to portray how events that occur in his life make him feel. A combination of both of those artists traits could really be interesting to experience.
One thing is certain for 2016, we are all excited about what it may bring with music. Hopefully, at least one of these actually happens (besides DOOMSTARKS, probably none). If not, it is always fun to think about which artists should consider making a collab album, join the conversation via social media with the hashtag #MITHREADSasks.
