ANALYZING THE ARTIST: Geno Gallardo

Understanding what you believe an artist’s purpose may be is what makes appreciating their work sweeter. Geno started making music when he was 15, amongst adversities he is still consistent with rapping and at the age he is now, regardless to the big move he still has remained true to his sound. In pursuing a career in rap your sound is very important, if you have poor quality sound and if you are not comfortable with your own sound you just look like a straight poser trying to be something you not. In my opinion, this is what measures what’s considered trash and what’s considered fire. However, when you are a seasoned rapper, nah scratch that, musician like Geno is, you actually take time to focus on your sound and all of its aspects.
Geno contacted me as a hungry artist, he is a hungry artist that is constantly inspired by other New Orleans rappers like Kidd Kidd of G-Unit & Soulja Slimm, he also displayed his dilligence while currently living in Houston; he sold out of all 1500 physical copies of his livemixtapes.com featured project titled, Fear Savage 2. With that being said, that’s what I liked best about Geno, he’s about as genuine as it gets, he’s not making his music for the fame, from the hustlers point of view I can almost guarantee that he appreciates the monetary gain, however the most important part of his music is it being true to him. I took some time to realize some things about myself when listened to Fear Savage 2 and noticed that I can unwarily put myself in a box with the sub-genres of rap. I often listen to east coast rap and besides Curren$y, Lil Wayne, Some August Alsina hooks, Big Tymers, and some old Hot Boyz tracks I never really gave any individual New Orleans artists spins. I believe it is because I may be what you call a “Hip-Hop Snob”, I’ve been so conditioned to enjoy only the music that I like, I couldn’t appreciate a different sound in the past.
That’s when I went on a New Orleans rap binge, all this week I’ve been realizing how important the New Orleans style and flow is to rap. After that I could really appreciate songs like “Deep In My Brain”. Geno and his inspirations all had amazing productions, they heavily focus on every track being uplifting to the listener, also I noticed that their flows typically remain the same throughout the duration of the song, regardless to the fluctuation of beats and tempo. That is what separates Geno from his New Orleans inspirations, Geno seems to have a mix of both a Texas and Louisiana drawl, with an ability to also harmonize with the hook of a song, as he did on tracks like “Shooters”, “They Don’t Understand”, and “All Night Long”.
Overall, Geno Gallardo’s music was an interesting experience; he has music that can be aggressive but unique with purpose. However, I can only tell you what I thought his purpose is, you can listen, download, and share Fear Savage 2 here on MITHREADS.
