Malcolm Quest, the 17-year-old unsigned artist from Jacksonville, FL has gifted listeners with the end results of having classic hip-hop legends as influences and a drive to create sound that is unheard of. He displays this on his latest project titled “1996”. Being able to speak to Malcolm was the first aspect to peak my interests in his music; his confidence in his music, as well as his drive to learn more about sound to influence his music positively. Malcom’s attitude is worthwhile, his latest project “1996” can give the listener an idea on his unique style, ability to relate to many different demographics, and how professional his recordings sessions are.

Quest’s “1996” gave great display that artists from this era can still appreciate 90’s music and remain unique, and not being posing, wannabe 90s rapper.

Uniqueness is always something that is appealing to me about all forms of art. Not that it’s an issue being a posing, wannabe 90s rapper, I just noticed that a lot of artists tend to fall victim to being so much like their hip-hop idols from the 90s that they fail to be themselves. With Quest I felt completely the opposite, throughout the duration of the project. I felt an artist that is extremely passionate about the sound he produces, who’s most comfortable with the sound associated with artists like: Dilla, the members of A Tribe Called Quest, MF DOOM, Capital Steez, and Kendrick Lamar. With such influences at his disposal, in his words being “a total band geek” when he was younger, as well as his passion for live instruments explains how unique Quest’s ability to create sound is.

I’ve spent a lot of time listening to Quest, enough to realize what his following is looking like so far, what’s really dope is that he has a very broad following with people of all ages and areas of the world. Quest’s YouTube active subscribers seem to have young and old people, who all enjoy listening to his sound. I completely understand why they are such active subscribers to Quest, at such a young age he has created a style that can never be emulated; because he is at such a young age his style can grow to even further heights than we can all expect.
